What does 'hypoallergenic' actually mean?

Legally, very little. No binding standard defines 'hypoallergenic', so the word can sit on jewellery that releases nickel. What is regulated — in the UK and EU — is nickel release itself, with strict limits for pierced jewellery. Ignore the adjective and look for material specifics: ASTM F-136 titanium or solid, nickel-safe 14k/18k gold.

A word with no referee

“Hypoallergenic” sounds like a certification. It reads as though somewhere a laboratory tested this earring, measured something, and issued a pass. Nothing of the kind is required. In the UK — and this is true across most of the world — no binding legal or technical standard defines what jewellery must be, contain, or not contain in order to be labelled hypoallergenic. The word means, at most, “the seller believes this is less likely to cause a reaction”, and at least, nothing whatsoever.

The practical consequence is the one that matters for ears: jewellery that releases nickel — the metal responsible for the overwhelming majority of jewellery reactions — can be, and routinely is, sold as hypoallergenic. The label and the problem coexist without contradiction, because the label was never a claim about nickel in the first place. A shopper choosing by that word is choosing by decoration.

This is not primarily a story about dishonest sellers. Plenty of merchants apply the label in good faith to jewellery they have never tested, passed down from suppliers who never tested it either. An unregulated word invites exactly this: everyone repeats it, nobody verifies it.

What actually is regulated

Here the news is better than most people expect. The UK and EU do regulate the thing that matters — not the adjective on the packaging, but nickel release from the metal itself.

Under the chemical-safety regime known as REACH, retained in UK law after Brexit, items intended for prolonged skin contact are subject to strict limits on how much nickel they may release over time — and for posts worn in piercings the limit is stricter still. Note the wording: the rules restrict nickel release, not nickel content. An alloy may lawfully contain nickel if that nickel stays locked in the metal rather than migrating into skin. This is measured, enforceable, and the reason severe “cheap earring rash” is less ubiquitous than it once was.

Two honest caveats. Enforcement is real but not omnipresent — market surveillance regularly finds imported fashion jewellery over the limits, particularly from online marketplaces selling directly from abroad. And the limits are set to protect the general population; a strongly sensitised individual can react to jewellery that is fully compliant. What to look for instead

Since the word is empty and the law is a floor rather than a guarantee, the useful strategy is the one running through this whole pillar: buy on named, specific, verifiable materials and ignore adjectives entirely.

  • For healed piercings: the same materials remain the safe harbour, with niobium and higher-karat golds as well-tolerated additions for most wearers.
  • From any seller: the test is whether they can answer “what is this made of?” with a specification rather than a synonym for gentle. “Implant-grade”, incidentally, is only meaningful with a standard attached — unmoored from ASTM or ISO numbers it drifts toward being the new hypoallergenic.

A useful habit: mentally delete marketing adjectives — hypoallergenic, surgical, sensitive-safe, dermatologist-tested — and see what factual claims survive. If the answer is none, so is the information.
